Scope of the role:

The Product Owner is the champion of their product. As the voice of the customer within your feature team, the Product Owner provides the focus for the team to execute upon, whilst from a business perspective, adds a degree of accountability to the day-to-day activity surrounding the product and ensures the engineering team is delivering the right features at the right time for the company’s customers.
The Product Owner is supported by the Product Management (PM) function that has content authority for the Product Backlog, and thus responsible for identifying Customer needs, prioritizing Features and developing the program Vision and Roadmap. The Product Owner is responsible to distil the Feature Backlog into a groomed sprint backlog for their Feature team.
The Product Owner has a significant role in quality control and is the only team member empowered to accept stories as done, and ready to be reviewed/tested by the PM. As the owner of the product and feature set within their Feature team, the Product Owner should be consulted about anything that will impact the sprint backlog, quality or delivery.

• Support the Product Manager in distilling epics and features (as defined in the Product Roadmap) down into Stories in the product backlog for your Feature team.
• Assist in requirement gathering efforts on the features/stories by consulting with all relevant stakeholders, including Product Managers, client facing teams (Sales/Account Management, Support, Customer Experience, and Project Management), and the Chief Information Security Officer and Chief Technology Officer (when applicable).
• Participate in Product Prioritization and Backlog Grooming sessions with Product Managers, User Interface / User Experience Designers, Quality Assurance, Technical Writing, Architects, and Engineers.
• Continuous review of business needs, refining of priorities and identification of risks.
• Document “Dev Ready” story details and acceptance criteria during and/or after Backlog Grooming sessions for your Feature team.
• Create mock-ups (if/when required) and work with User Interface / User Experience Designers on front-end designs.
• Identify and communicate the sprint goals for your Feature team.
• Collaborate with the Product Owners of the other Feature teams to map out dependencies to ensure the necessary sequence of development.

During Sprint

• Organize and facilitate scrum meetings including stand-ups, grooming and planning.
• Drive the sprint goals for your Feature team.
• Work collaboratively with Engineers and the Quality Assurance team to successfully deliver sprint stories and reach the definition of done.
• Perform testing and validation, ensuring that user stories meet their acceptance criteria.
• Document all stories completed for your Feature team in Feature documentation.


• Organize and facilitate scrum meetings including review, demo and retrospectives for your Feature team.
• Assist Product Manager in demonstrating the latest iterations to internal stakeholders and gather feedback.


• Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Product Owner.
• In-depth knowledge of Agile process and principles.
• In-depth knowledge of Agile process and principles.Knowledge of software development lifecycle.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Strong communication, verbal and written skills to both internal and external stakeholders.
• Strong sense of proactivity, taking initiative and results driven.
• Demonstrated interest in community service and leadership in volunteer organizations is a strong plus.
• Experience in emergency response / public safety is not required, but experience in other industries that deal with communications in time-sensitive and high-stakes requirements are a plus.
